This stucco-fronted house on a quiet side street in Belsize Park may not attract many tourists, but anyone with an interest in the Bloomsbury Group and Virginia Woolf will be intrigued to know that it was once the home of writer and critic Lytton Strachey.

A founding member of the Bloomsbury Group and author of the Eminent Victorians, Lytton lived in Belsize Park for much of his London life.

Strachey never married but had various relationships with both men and women throughout his life, including an affair with painter Dora Carrington which ended tragically when she committed suicide just two months after his death at the premature age of 51. He famously proposed to Virginia Woolf at this property in Belsize Park, but despite her acceptance he is said to have regretted it almost immediately and retracted his offer the next day. However, they remained
life long friends and he encouraged Leonard Woolf to propose to her instead, and they were married on August 10th 1912.

The property is now divided into apartments rather than the single house it was in Strachey’s day, but the exterior is still as it would have been when he, Virginia, Dora and other members of the famous literary and intellectual group visited.
