2016 - The year we break away from Beige homes?

Have you ever stopped to think about how colour in your home could sway a successful sale? Central London estate agents Sandfords has visited thousands of London properties during its 30 year (and counting) history, and the most memorable homes have been awash with colour and personality.

Andrew Ellinas, the Managing Director at Sandfords, says buyers on property viewings usually have a short time frame to draw conclusions about a property they visit: “Making an impression with colour is a great way of marking your home out from the rest. Not only does it make an impression in the flesh, colour also adds a point of interest when we take our marketing photographs. A home bursting with colour really stands out when viewed in a sea of online listings or when a brochure is laid out on a table with other examples.”

Despite the obvious benefits of colour in the home, a new survey reveals that as a nation we are firmly rooted in the bland and boring. The poll conducted by revealed that 85% of UK adults confessed to sticking to the same basic colour palette when making decisions on home interiors, with the majority option for a beige or neutral colour scheme.

Perhaps the future is brighter, however, with 71% of respondents saying they would like to ‘use more colour’, with 58% agreeing that they felt ‘bored’ and 27% ‘depressed’ about the lack of colour in their lives.

If you are thinking of selling your London property or have moved to a new home with a blank canvas, you can add colour with ease. Here are Sandford’s top tips for injecting a sense of excitement by decorating and using accessories-

  • Swap your usual paint colour - if your ‘go to’ colour is Elephant’s Breath by Farrow & Ball or Timeless by Dulux, be bolder next time you paint. We’re not suggesting you decorate a whole room in Raspberry Sorbet but think about a feature wall in something with more impact.
  • Use white as a foil for bright colours - a white wall is a brilliant place to display colourful works of art. Hang an oversized canvas or place a bright piece of furniture up against a white wall for dramatic impact.
  • Accessorise with colour - rugs, cushions, blinds, candles and vases can be used to dramatically change a room. Don’t be frightened to clash colours in small doses - think blue and orange, or purple and yellow.
  • Use flower power - fresh or silk flowers are a great addition to any home that’s on the market. Floral prints are another great way to add colour to a room - perhaps a feature wall of floral wallpaper or some bold floral-print cushions on a cream sofa.
