Swiss cottage area guide

Its architectural style replicated a Swiss chalet and so it was named the Swiss Tavern.

Swiss Cottage is a small area in the London Borough of Camden centred around the junction of Avenue Road and Finchley Road. Swiss Cottage estate agents often comment that the area is favoured by home movers who desire a less 'obvious' location than nearby Belsize Park, Hampstead Village and Camden Town.

Swiss Cottage History

The name Swiss Cottage dates back to an inn that was built in the area in 1804. Its architectural style replicated a Swiss chalet and so it was named the Swiss Tavern. It was later renamed The Swiss Cottage and so the moniker began. The tavern was originally surrounded by fields and was described as being on the 'outskirts' of London.

A more densely populated Swiss Cottage started evolving in the 1920s and 1930s. Swiss Cottage quickly turned into a neighbourhood in its own right, spearheaded by the opening of the Tube station in 1939. The construction of a cinema and the reconditioning of the roads to accommodate motor vehicles also helped popularise the area. The Swiss Cottage Inn is still a public house today, although one that holds Grade II listed status.
