Marylebone Village Estate Agents Area Guide

Marylebone Village Property, History & Transport

Marylebone Village is centred on Marylebone High Street and Marylebone Lane, which have become famous in recent years as the place the chain shops forgot. No ‘High Street names’ here – just local shops catering for discerning customers. Shops offering jewellery, shoes, eyewear, buttons, ribbons and books, rub along with the wide range of womenswear, beauty treatments, and more. Food outlets include a traditional butcher championed by Jamie Oliver, a cheese shop, an artisan baker, several wine shops and a grocer’s shop like they used to be.

The Village also has two weekly markets, a farmers’ market on Sundays and the quirky Cabbages and Frocks on Saturday, devoted to food’n’fashion.
It’s not just about shopping, however. Marylebone Village has several art galleries and venues, and at the top of the street stands the Georgian St Marylebone Parish Church. Lord Nelson’s daughter by Emma Hamilton, Horatia, was christened here. Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barratt married in the church when she fled from virtual imprisonment in her family home in Wimpole Street, after which the couple moved to Italy.

Property in the area ranges from elegant Georgian town houses to large apartments in mansion blocks, down to charming mews houses.

The area is owned mainly by the Howard de Walden Estate, who have invested heavily in the infrastructure. Marylebone Village now rivals Chelsea as a great address.
